Are open networks safe?

February 12, 2021 inhabits

Adapting to a world in constant motion means recognizing that we do not only inhabit physical reality, but that we spend most of our time in virtual reality. We manage our personal life, our office, and our finances through applications in which we place our trust; however, it is necessary to have similar, or even greater, precautions than those we have when we go out on the street. Protecting our data ensures that we live with greater freedom in the spaces we enter.

The increase in the use of the Internet to carry out social, educational or work activities has increased the risks that information may suffer on our devices if we do not take care to protect them. “Cybercriminals find a significant number of misconfigured Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) servers, leading to more attacks of this type,” warns the website specializing in computer security “Threat Intelligence Insider, and reports that between January and June 2020 there were “5 billion attacks in Latin America and the Caribbean” in terms of computer risks.

Our technological devices not only communicate with us, but they also store our information. Loranni Constanzo Castillo, head of Connectivity and Competitiveness Capabilities at Seguros SURA, explains in ElDinero.com: This “has become one of the most valuable resources for people and companies. It is becoming increasingly necessary to deliver solutions that protect it and Raise awareness of the risks to which it is exposed, given the state of vulnerability in which we live."

Many public places such as shopping centers, educational and cultural centers usually offer free access to open Wi-Fi networks and although they represent a benefit, it is important know how they work to avoid the risks of being exposed to cyber attacks. Being aware of this, advising ourselves and protecting ourselves ensures that we live safer virtual experiences knowing that “When making a connection without a password, also known as open networks, the data we transmit can be read by anyone, both the administrator and other users connected to the network. The information is exposed to anyone who knows how to read it and to do so it is not necessary to have very high technical knowledge.” The Office of Internet Security (OSI):

Once we know the risks of using this type of network, we can use its services with all the precautions we are aware of. To do this, we can keep in mind some recommendations, such as the following ones provided by the company: OR IF:

  1. If we are going to connect, it is preferable to access a network with WPA or WPA2 security. Open networks with WEP security are completely insecure.

  2. Let's not log in (username/password) in any service while we are connected to a public network.

  3. Let's avoid making banking transactions, online shopping or any other task that involves the exchange of private data over public Wi-Fi networks.

  4. Disable any process synchronization of our equipment if we are going to use a public network.

  5. Always keep your equipment up to date, with the antivirus installed correctly and, if possible, use a firewall. After connecting, delete the network data stored by our computer.

Being technological inhabitants, immersed in a wide universe of cybernetic communications and information, is aspire to technological development experiences that provide us with support against risks or loss of our information. With insurance SURA We can inform ourselves and feel supported thanks to the advice of experts in technology and cybersecurity.
