Ten benefits of electric mobility

September 25, 2020 move on

Electric mobility is a bet that is getting stronger over the years and offers multiple benefits, including mitigating the damage caused by fossil fuels. We tell you about this and other advantages.

It's simple: when energy doesn't come from fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced and thus the environmental impact is diminished. It's a simple equation that took years to understand, but is now a reality.

Electric mobility is that which uses motors powered by electricity, whose use is unlimited and adaptable to any motorized means of transport. This fact is relevant because 195 countries in the world agreed, in the last 21st United Nations Summit on Climate Change, which starting in 2020 would begin the transformation of its traditional automotive industry to electric vehicles, with the hope of having zero gas emissions by 2050.

While it is important to implement a series of actions and policies by government institutions, the decisions we make as individuals in this regard are also important. To do so, we will tell you the 10 most notable benefits of electric mobility:

  1. Air quality: The WHO estimates that around 7 million people worldwide die from respiratory diseases caused by poor air quality in large cities. Electric vehicles do not emit toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, which are lethal in high concentrations.
  2. Greenhouse effect: : doing away with combustion engines also means eliminating the emission of greenhouse gases produced by cars that directly affect climate change and, according to the European Union, are responsible for more than 30% of CO emissions2.
  3. Less noise pollution: Electric vehicles generate less than 30 decibels, which is within a normal hearing range and is the ideal state; combustion vehicles generate on average, according to the doctor Robert Barti, Director of RBD-Acoustics, 74 decibels, which exposes us to severe hearing loss.
  4. Greater circulation space: Due to pollution issues, some countries have restricted access to fuel vehicles in delimited areas; an electric vehicle has no such restrictions.
  5. Cheaper check-ups: There is no need for exhaust gas testing in this class of vehicles and no need to replace oil, filters and fluids. In addition, they have 90% fewer components than combustion engines.
  6. Free parking: To encourage their use, in most cities there are free parking areas for this type of vehicle, including those places where it is normally difficult to find space.
  7. Comfort: The engine size is considerably smaller and this is a challenge for automotive industry designers, who have been able to take advantage of this space to benefit the habitability of the vehicle, that is, the space available to the driver and passengers inside, with greater comfort.
  8. Exemption from peak and plate measures, car-free day and other mobility restriction measures: In some countries in the region such as Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela, due to the large number of vehicles in circulation and the congestion they generate, measures are implemented that allow for higher speeds during peak hours; however, electric vehicles are exempt, as is the case in São Paulo, which in 2014 approved Law 15.997, which provides that Power Plants, electric hybrids and those powered by hydrogen fuel cells that are registered in the city will be free from vehicle restrictions, making it easier to have the car available whenever we need it.
  9. Savings on fuel costs: According to the analysis “Transport and technology in Latin America: How far into the future are we?According to the World Bank's Global Plan of Action, 22 cities in Latin America will replace their current public transport fleet with electric vehicles, which will mean savings of around 2030 billion dollars in fuel and a reduction of 64.000 million tons of CO300 equivalent by 2.
  10. Tax benefits: in the Colombian case, the Law 1964 of 2019 stipulates the tax benefits for people who buy electric vehicles (10% less on SOAT, discounts on vehicle registration and technical-mechanical inspection, among others).

And these are just some of the benefits that electric mobility brings with it, which, although it is in a stage of exploration and growth, is an important bet on sustainability issues in the world that, fortunately, is supported by international agreements and clear policies of countries, especially where the automotive industry is important.
