What is habitat?

January 28, 2021 Be healthy

Our living space is changing along with our thinking and ways of relating to nature: public space, people and everything that provides us with well-being. We change, because we are not alone. We form a network that day by day seeks greater well-being in an environment that adapts with us and through which we ensure that we live more connected to who we are.

What do we mean by habitat? to understand this concept today and explore it beyond the physical place that serves as our shelter, we will start from the definition provided by the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy about this word.

habitat:

From lat. habĭtat, 3rd pers. of sing. of the pres. of indication from habitāre 'to inhabit'.
1. m. Ecol. Place with appropriate conditions for an organism, species or animal or plant community to live.
2. m. Environment particularly suited to someone's personal tastes and needs.
3. m. Urb. Constructed space in which man lives.

These meanings refer to suitable spaces, which may or may not be built, and which have conditions suited to our tastes and needs. Space, as a habitat, states the specialized magazine Cardinalis from the National University of Córdoba, “is not fixed, it is being rediscovered as produced, mutable; as a complex expression of social relations.”

For our humanity, closeness and exchange with other people is fundamental, and it is not easy to conceive the rural and the urban separately. We are increasingly closer and more interconnected. He says Neil Brenner that “the geographies of urbanization(…) are acquiring new morphologies and more importantly, they pierce, traverse and explode the old division between urban and rural” and unite us as a great constellation of social relations and exchanges.

Talking about habitat is explore the world, beyond the ceiling or the walls that surround us, is to connect with new relationships and experiences.
