What are vaccines?

February 22, 2021 Be healthy

Our body has a very important system that protects us from microorganisms and bacteria to which we are exposed in every place and at all times. Without this system we would be unprotected and interaction with public objects or spaces would represent a serious danger for us. Vaccines help to boost our immune system. How?

Vaccines are, according to the World Health Organization WHO “a simple, harmless and effective way to protect ourselves from harmful diseases before we come into contact with them.” It comes in liquid form and is administered through injections or orally. Once inside our body, this chemical substance helps our natural defenses create antibodies by providing information, in advance, about the virus.

To create this type of medicine, or reactions in our immune system, requires technological and scientific progress that allows the early development of effective and reliable vaccines. This method It has existed for two hundred years approximately and was discovered when Edward Jenner, the father of immunology, “observed that some women who milked cows seemed to be protected from smallpox.” The American Academy of Pediatricians and adds:

“He then experimented by adding a small amount of smallpox to an infected child. He hoped that the procedure would immunize the child against the deadly smallpox infection. Indeed, it did. Jenner’s experiment ushered in the era of vaccinations.”

From that moment on, advances were not long in coming. One hundred years later, “Dr. Louis Pasteur demonstrated that disease could be prevented by infecting humans with weakened germs.” Today, vaccines are the main, safest and most effective method of science and medicine's success in protecting and saving lives. In fact, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), “Immunization saves between 2 and 3 million lives each year.”

If a person comes into contact with the microorganism against which he or she was vaccinated, no matter when, the defenses generated by the vaccine are responsible for protecting him or her to avoid the disease or to make it mild. The vaccination method allows us to increase the level of defenses through multiple barriers:

  1. Immunity of a large protective shield: Prevents the virus or bacteria from entering the body.
  2. Combat team. The virus or bacteria enters the body to weaken it so that the person only experiences a mild form of illness.
  3. Protective bubble: Some vaccines They are so powerful that they manage to avoid that the virus or bacteria is transmitted from one person to another. They stop the spread.

Being protected against viruses or diseases before we become infected ensures that we live without uncertainty in the face of future threats. With the specialized and professional support of Seguros SURA we can plan our health.
