Have we ever wondered how we overcome adverse situations in life? Adapting to or overcoming the difficult moments we face allows us to develop and strengthen our ability to endure and face everything difficult, ensuring that we live with greater capacity to overcome all obstacles.

Resilience is, according to the American Psychological Association (WATER) “the process of adapt well to adversity, to trauma, tragedy, threat, or significant sources of stress, such as family or relationship problems, serious health problems, or stressful work or financial situations.”

This is part of the capabilities, as defense mechanisms, that keep our mental health in balance and that allow us to overcome pain, find new paths and learn from crucial experiences to cope with future losses and challenges. It is also important to note that being resilient It does not exempt us from feeling sadness, anguish or emotional pain, but its qualities are precisely to cope with the stimuli that cause negative feelings.

The sociocultural context and the personal construction of each individual are attributes that provide more elements to be resilient. Individual positive conditions: "such as the control of emotions and impulses, autonomy, sense of humor, high self-esteem (positive self-concept), empathy, ability to understand and analyze situations" are some of the capabilities, says the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), to protect us and help us overcome difficulties.

The strategies that each person is able to obtain to cope with stressful or anxiety-generating situations, as is currently the case with all the unexpected situations in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, provide us with tools that empower us the development and acquisition of strategies to feel well and overcome our states of anxiety or pain.
