COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the WHO. Prevention and care begin with access to quality information. That is why today, from SURA, we share with you the answer to these three basic questions:
What is the coronavirus?
When we talk about coronavirus, we are referring to old acquaintances. These are a broad group of viruses that can cause diseases in both animals and humans.
In humans, they cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more serious diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
In this opportunity, Alarm bells are ringing over the most recently discovered coronavirus that causes the disease known as COVID-19.
How is it transmitted?
According to the World Health Organization, the virus spreads mainly from person to person, from respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby and possibly enter the lungs when they breathe.
But that is not the only way of contagion. It can also occur through contact with contaminated objects. For example, if an infected person coughs or sneezes and these droplets remain on a surface, the virus can reach the hands of other people, which is potentially infectious if they then touch their mouth, nose or eyes with that same hand.
There is currently no evidence that the new coronavirus is transmitted between pets and humans.
