Our body is 60% water. Just as the planet needs rain to reach even the most desert-like places, our vitality depends to a large extent on the constant consumption of water, especially in times of isolation.
During the quarantine we are experiencing in different places around the world, we may forget to constantly hydrate our body. Juan Bedoya, a doctor from the University of Antioquia, recommends seeing water as one of the most important elements in our daily lives. Here are some recommendations he makes to prevent our body from overexerting itself due to lack of hydration:
Water facilitates the response of the immune system. It is common for a virus attack to trigger alerts in the body as a response mechanism. Every time our immune system responds, it makes a significant effort that involves using its water reserves. In the case of dehydration, for example, we would be facing slow responses and a virus could cause damage in an accelerated manner.
- Taking care of our kidneys. Frequent water consumption during long periods of isolation will allow our body to maintain its normal functioning and be ready to respond to any attack.
- Remedy for fever. We all imagine that fever causes the body to lose fluids, and that is indeed the case. The increase in body temperature causes dehydration. Staying hydrated, even at this time, will be of vital importance.
- To take care of the muscles. Exercising at home or increasing some household activities can represent physical efforts that we did not do frequently before. Good hydration will facilitate the elasticity of our muscles and prevent injuries when lifting a piece of furniture or sweeping our home.
- A shower is a must at home. In addition to hydration, water is essential for personal hygiene. Don't go a day without taking a shower and completing your personal hygiene routine. Activating the body with a bath also benefits skin care and prevents dryness or dermatological problems.
- Constant home cleaning. Use water responsibly during your home cleaning routines. The combination of water with some cleaning products creates healthy environments and keeps every space you inhabit protected.
- Water and entertainment. It may seem unrelated, but if you spend a lot of time in front of your computer or use your cell phone a lot, water is your best companion. Keeping your body hydrated will facilitate the production of tears that will keep your eyes lubricated while you entertain yourself or work.
Remember: It is recommended to drink between 2 and 3 liters per day, which is equivalent to 7 or 8 glasses on average. In addition, you can combine water consumption with some fruits and vegetables that also provide your body with significant amounts of liquid.
